A first look at the LG Chocolate BL40
It seems apt to be pondering the pros and cons of watching films on a small screen on the very day that Apple has released its 10-inch iPad. I have always been amused by seeing fellow commuters on the tube squinting to watch a film on their iPhone.
This is why I was sceptical when LG announced the Chocolate BL40 , an addition to its premium Black Label range. The phone has a 4-inch wide screen, designed for 21:9 widescreen viewing. Hats off to LG -- colours do pop on this screen, which has a resolution of 345 x 800 pixels. This makes watching content a little more bearable, but when the screen really comes into its own is web browsing.
You get full HTML at 7.2Mbps HSDPA speeds, though it's the shape of the screen that makes surfing particularly pleasurable -- you can simply see more than on most phones, including the iPhone. Added advantages are the visual history option, which shows past pages as thumbnails you can quickly flick through, a fairly easy to use RSS feed reader, and an ability to save web pages and then look at them offline later. There's even a pinch-and-zoom tool although it doesn't come up to Apple or Android standards.
