RE/MAX Classic's Used Cell Phone Campaign Aids Soldiers Overseas

Complain all you want about your cellular phone minute plan.
When U.S. military personnel stationed in Afghanistan, Iraq or Kuwait call home to connect with friends and family, they do so at an average rate of $7 per minute, said Carol Boji, broker and owner of RE/MAX Classic in Farmington Hills with additional offices in Canton, Milford and Novi.
The premium on such precious phone time caused Boji to get involved with Cell Phones for Soldiers, a non-profit organization that provides free calling cards to U.S. troops by collecting and recycling mobile phones.
“It’s a fantastic program, and it’s been a pleasure for us to work with it,” Boji said.
RE/MAX Classic’s real estate agents do a “monster job” collecting used cellular phones, frequently drawing on their deep business and networking contacts, she said. The company has collected 13,000 phones for Cell Phones For Soldiers since June 2008.
Although the company’s agents have collected a whopping 3,000 phones this year, Boji hopes to significantly increase that figure by opening the drive to the general public and accepting donations at all four RE/MAX Classic offices during the holiday season.
