Gadget review - LG Optimus 3D P920

Some have claimed to get dizzy and nauseous from using 3D but that has not stopped manufacturers from trying to emulate reality by introducing it to their devices.
The 3D glasses-free LG Optimus 3D P920 — SA’s first 3D smartphone — alerts users to take a break if they experience dizziness. However, we didn’t experience any symptoms. Luckily one can use the phone in 2D mode.
3D applications include 3D games, taking 3D pictures and video capturing and watching 3D videos from YouTube.
When not using the 3D mode, the smartphone is a competent performer. Its 10,9cm LCD screen is crystal clear, videos have satisfactory depth and it displays solid graphics — as though using a miniature HD TV. Switching to 3D mode could be fun when playing games but the novelty soon wears off. Though the colour depth is impressive, 3D images and videos tend to be distorted and strain the eyes.
The phone has two 5MP rear cameras (which produce the 3D effect), an HDMI and micro USB port. It runs Android 2.2, but can be upgraded to Android 2.3, and it has a 1GHz dual core processor. Introducing 3D without viewing glasses to the phone was a good idea but unlike Nintendo, which got glasses-free 3D right on the Nintendo 3DS, LG hasn’t perfected it yet.
