Uncapped mobile broadband still a challenge: Vodacom

During a Q&A session at the MyBroadband conference hosted at Vodacom World today (26 October 2011), Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys said that they haven’t yet figured out how to offer uncapped mobile broadband package.
Uys went on to argue that “no one has,” saying that if one looks at the EU and US markets, operators are moving away from fully uncapped models and towards capped.
In South Africa, MTN launched its first “uncapped” mobile broadband offerings on 1 June 2010. MTN’s Unlimited Lite package launched at a price of R749 per month while its Unlimited Pro package was priced at R1,999.
These were uncapped only in the sense that you weren’t cut off when you went over the usage limits of the accounts. The Unlimited Lite and Unlimited Pro packages had fair use limits of 3GB and 10GB respectively, and the user’s speed is throttled to 128kbps when they reach these thresholds.
In July this year (2011) MTN slashed the price of its Uncapped Lite package from R749 to R299, and reduced the price of its Uncapped Pro service from R1,999 to R899.
